China Clipper Over the Royal Hawaiian imagines two icons of Hawaiʻi’s golden age of travel sharing the Waikīkī skyline: Pan American Airways’ legendary China Clipper flying above the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
The arrival of Pan Am’s transpacific flying boats in the 1930s helped usher Hawaiʻi into a new era of international travel, while the Royal Hawaiian—opened in 1927 and instantly recognizable for its pink façade—embodied the romance and glamour of Waikīkī tourism. Together, they evoke a moment when reaching Hawaiʻi was still an event unto itself.
Rendered through Solario’s nostalgic, print-inspired visual language, the piece draws on the color, texture, and idealized imagery of vintage travel advertising while remaining distinctly contemporary—a portrait of Hawaiʻi as both a real place and an enduring destination of the imagination.
